Obituary for Ernest Otis Nelson

Ernest Otis Nelson went to be with the Lord on August 4, 2020 from symptoms of the COVID virus. Born in Republic County, Kansas in 1922.
Ernie was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Betty Nelson. He proudly attended Kansas State University on a track scholarship, also serving in WWII as an army civil engineer. He and Betty had 4 children; Steve and wife Peggy, Dennis and wife Sally, Diane Ray, husband Jack, and Lori McQuilkin and husband Mark .
Ernie worked for Panhandle Eastern/Trunkline Co, retiring as Senior Vice President, served the AGA, SGA, Representative for U.S. on World Energy Commission and Board of Directors of K. State Engineering Dept. He faithfully served as President of the church council at Faith Lutheran Church in Kansas City, and the Trinity Hospital Board. His passion was the game of golf, as a member of Indian Hills CC, he and his wife formed wonderful bonds with many members over the years.
The greatest, cherished pride for Ernie was his grandchildren; Kimberly DeLaat and husband Kevin, David Nelson and wife Reid, Kelly Butrum, and husband Grant, Charlie Ray, and wife Alexis, Maggie Nelson, Katie Broulette, and husband Brandon Broulette, Luke McQuilkin, Sam McQuilkin, and Cory McQuilkin, and great grandchildren Cameron DeLaat, Conner DeLaat, Cooper Nelson, Brantley Nelson, William Butrum, Elizabeth Butrum, Gwenyth Ray, and Cameron Broulette, with whom he devoted many hours, vacations, and games encouraging them and teaching patience and perseverance in their pursuits.
Ernie has resided in Houston for the last 13 years at the Buckingham and was fondly thought of by all who knew him there. Ernie will be greatly missed and in lieu of contributions, your prayers and memories will be cherished.
