Obituary for John Russell Thompson Jr.

John Russell Thompson Jr. (nicknamed BD), born September 1, 1970 in Honolulu, HI, passed from this life on September 27, 2020 at his home in Houston, TX at the age of 50. As a young boy, John enjoyed living near the beach in Hawaii where he loved to spend many hours combing the sand for puka shells and body boarding in the waves. After a move to California, John completed his studies in Carlsbad. John moved to Los Angles where he became one of the youngest licensed traders to work for Merrill Lynch at the time. He moved on to start his own venture capital company where he enjoyed much success raising capital for various sized companies over many different industries. John married and had two daughters whom he adored. He then married his second wife who was the love of his life to the end. John supported his wife in a move to Houston when a new career opportunity presented itself.

John was selfless, always taking care of his family, friends and others around him. He had a passion for good food and learned to cook so that he could share beautiful meals with those he loved. He enjoyed history and travelling to discover other cultures which furthered his inspiration for cooking.

John was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, James and Elizabeth Thompson, and his maternal grandparents, Vernon Chu and Ruth Solomon. He is survived by his father and stepmother, John and Dawn Thompson (Lake Havasu, AZ), his mother, Gloria Biven (Kailua-Kona, HI), wife, Catherine Thompson (Houston, TX) and daughters, Karena and Isabelle Thompson and their mother, Michele Rede (Carmel Valley, CA). He is also survived by his loving siblings, Melissa Bacha, Kamomi Biven, Ashley Willi, Tyler Thompson, Kirstee Biven, and Makaela Thompson, as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and their children.

A celebration of life will be scheduled in California and in Hawaii at future dates. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice in remembrance of John’s spirit of sharing.
