Obituary for Mercedes Hitchcock

Mercedes Hitchcock, with the right hand of Jesus, was escorted into her final and glorious home in Heaven on February 20, 2023.

She was born in Houston on March 12, 1929 to Bernelle and Mercedes Holtz. She graduated Lamar High School Valedictorian then SMU where she was President of Tri Delta Sorority and voted Most Beautiful. She received her Masters from The University of Miami. She married her high school sweetheart, Joe Hitchcock in 1952. While Joe was in Korea, Mercedes was an elementary teacher. She was a member of St Luke’s UMC & saw 3 generations marry there. She later belonged to First UMC of Missouri City.

Mercedes was an at home Mom for her four children: Cyndi, Sherry, Bob, and Greg, yet still had time for her many interests and talents in this life she adored. She was an artist and painted numerous house replicas for many prominent Houstonians including such art lovers and philanthropists as the late Harris Masterson and Miss Ima Hogg. She helped start The Greater Houston Golden Retriever Club and her respected Belvedere Kennel bred some of the best golden retrievers in the country. She traveled throughout the country to compete in field trials and was invited to Holland to put on field training seminars. Mercedes was a longtime member of The Houston Herb Society and had beautiful gardens and home filled with flowers and grew over 30 varieties of antique roses.

Mercedes was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joe of 56 years, her son Greg Hitchcock, and her son-in-law John English. She leaves behind to pass on her legacy of love to daughters Cyndi Albury, Sherry English, son Bob Hitchcock, daughter-in-law, Carrie Hitchcock, 10 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. She left us a wealth of cherished memories, and was a strong and determined woman, especially in her faith in Jesus who always has open arms and amazing grace for each of us.

A service to honor her life well lived will be held on what would be her 94th birthday, Sunday March 12, First United Methodist Church, 3900 Lexington Blvd, Missouri City at 3:00 pm.

Donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Missouri City, Round Top Festival Institute, Golden Beginnings: Golden Retriever Rescue, or a charity of your choice.
