Obituary for Rex Britton Wherry

Rex Wherry, an irrepressible presence, passed peacefully on Sunday, Jan 3rd at age 66.
Rex never met a stranger and was first to lend a hand. He had a voracious appetite for knowledge and deep respect of culture. Rex savored music of all genres, food and drink of all origins and easily forged life-long friendships wherever he landed. He was fiercely independent and proudly resistant to conventional expectation.
His spark ignited June 2nd, 1954 by loving parents Britt and Del Wherry. Starting kindergarten in Mexico City and later choosing his own school graduation date from HISD, Rex fueled his insatiable zest for life daily. He purchased his first guitar as a teenager and found his greatest love through music creation, collaboration, and performance. He was happiest when gathered with just one or many of his diverse and enduring friends, some spanning over 50 years in shared adventures.
Rex was a hardworking man by day and into the night - thriving in career experiences spanning the jungles of Ecuador to wine and whiskey distilleries nationally. A charming and effective presence, he excelled in every endeavor. An accomplished and respected musician, he happily traveled wherever his guitar led. Rex was a welcome addition to every stage, performing for over 50 years in countless rock, country, blues, and zydeco venues throughout Texas, many states and abroad.
Rex was a magnet for celebration. His quick wit, sharp humor and engaging nature enlivened any gathering. His enthusiasm for life was shared with everyone he met. He could tell you or take you anywhere - as he was constantly exploring and enjoying all of life’s bounty.
He honored his family, and his dearest loves were his children Peyton and Brittany. Rex was a fun-loving “Doo” and “Pops” who delighted in sharing his many hobbies and interests with them both. He was the absolute Cool Dad who let kids explore and experience life on their own terms. He naturally became “The Dude” that Peyton and Brittany’s friends loved to hang with. There was always good music and a welcome vibe.
He leaves in legacy his beloved children Peyton Edward and Brittany Rose, daughter-in-law Ana Blanco Denman and adored granddaughters Liliana Maria and Luna Milena. Celebrating his memories are life partners Alice Denman, Rose Wherry, Jan Hanselman, and lifelong good buddy Joe Miranda.
Jan and Rex enjoyed many years of happy, fulfilling experiences. Her enduring love, care and companionship sustained and uplifted his spirit through the last challenge of a life well lived.
Rex is preceded in death by his parents Rixie Britton Wherry, Delores Del Wherry and brother Wray Harrison Wherry.
Funeral services are pending. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in June when we can safely gather again.
We will deeply miss his place on the stage and at the table, but never forget his influence to live with passion and gusto. Be assured that wherever soul fueled music is played, and glasses rise in tribute under a smoky haze, Rex will be there in spirit and song.
