Obituary for Sally Bess Harpool

Sally Bess Harpool, 73, of Houston, Texas passed away after a long illness on October 27, 2022.

Sally was born on February 28, 1949, in Dallas, Texas to Rebecca Moseley Harpool and Robert Thomas Harpool Jr. She was raised in Denton, Texas, and began her lifetime church involvement at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, where she was baptized and sang in their choirs through college. She was the second of the Harpools’ seven children. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings: Susan Harpool Allison, Kirk William Harpool, and Scott Moseley Harpool.

Sally attended NTSU Lab School and Denton High School, class of 1967. She graduated from University of North Texas in 1971 with a degree in Education and maintained lifelong friends with her Zeta Tau Alpha sorority sisters.

Sally fondly called Houston home since graduating from college. She had a very fulfilling career teaching 35 years in several Houston area school districts, retiring from the Alief Independent School District in 2006, and enjoyed many close lifelong friends through her profession. She was actively involved with Houston Junior League, and The Blue Bird Circle in Houston. Music was one of her passions and along with singing, she played the piano, guitar, banjo, and performed with handbell ensembles, including Houston Festival Ringers. She was a devoted Houston Astros fan, and if she was not attending a live game, she would be watching and cheering for them at home.

Sally was deeply involved in the life of First Presbyterian Church of Houston where she was a member for 50 years and served as a Deacon, Elder, and President of the Chancel Choir. She loved her Chancel Choir family and worked in the music library for many years. She especially enjoyed the choir trips and the lifelong friends she made in the Chancel Choir.

Sally is survived by her brother Bob and wife, Debby of Little Elm; brother John and partner Richard Gordon of Irving; sister Leslie Wefelmeyer and husband, Ron of Houston; brother-in-law Richard Allison, II and wife Lora of Magnolia; nephew Richard Allison, III and wife Jennifer of Houston; nieces Katy Wefelmeyer Songy and husband Cade of Atlanta, GA, Mariah Gan and daughter Esme of Oak Point, and Molly Blocker of Austin; great-niece and nephew Susan Rebecca and James Savage Allison of Houston; Aunt Rose Marie Harpool of Denton, and many dear cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main St. Houston, TX on Thursday, November 10 at 10:00 am in the Sanctuary, followed by a reception in fellowship hall, The Rev. Dr. Bill Heston officiating. Arrangements by A Sacred Choice Funeral Home. A private burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Denton.
